Health Benefits of California Walnuts
Walnuts are a very healthy nutritional snack. A handful of California walnuts is a versatile snack and can satisfy any taste preference, from sweet to savory.
Did you know we all prefer one or the other? Do you prefer sweet or savory? Whichever you prefer, walnuts can be made into lots of recipes that are sweet and savory. And, they are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids/ALA.
What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
Omega-3 fatty acids are important fats that help reduce inflammation, lower triglyceride levels and improve lipids, and have been shown in research to help lower the risk of Alzheimer disease and strokes. Omega-3's are polyunsaturated fats. Fatty fishes and fish oils are the most well known source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3's are considered essential fatty acids, meaning your body can't make them, so you must get them through your diet or supplements.
The three most important types of omega-3's are EPA, DHA, and ALA. ALA is found mostly in plants, while EPA and DHA are mostly found in fish oils. ALA can be converted to EPA and DHA by those who are vegan or vegetarian, but the process is limited. So a diet high in ALA is important for those who are not fish lovers.
Foods High in ALA:
- walnuts- the only nut with ALA!
- chia seeds
- flax seeds
- hemp seeds
- Brussel sprouts
